4 Tips For Writing Better Digital Content 12-2-16.jpg

The say people don’t read nowadays.  But boy are they wrong.  Recent studies confirm that people indeed prefer written content over every other type of content.

But not just any content.  Writing for digital is very different from any other type of writing.  Why?  Because the reading experience has been forever changed with emerging technology and shifting lifestyles.  And while it is true that average attention spans are shrinking, employing content best practices will assure that your readers stay with you until the end of your piece.  Here are a few tips for writing for digital:

  • Write shorter paragraphs

Remember the four-sentence for each paragraph rule?  Toss it out the window.  Right now.  People favor easy-to-digest paragraphs, where one idea is explained in a few sentences and you move on to your next point.

  • Write conversationally

Write as if you’re having a conversation with someone.  There’s no need to impress with a fancy vocabulary or complex terms.  People want their information in an easy-to-understand manner.

  • Add some images

Break up long content with supporting images.  It will not only make your page look better but it will provide a much-needed visual break, especially in long pieces.

  • Forget about ideal content length

The ideal content length is much debated nowadays.  Some swear by the 500-word rule, others say that the magic is somewhere near 1,000 words.  The truth is write whatever you need to write.  Don’t try to extend a piece or leave out important information for the sake of hitting a word count.

  • Have something to say

People will sniff out fillers a mile away.  Make sure that your content is informative and engaging.  Choose a topic and make sure that you provide value to your readers.

While writing for digital can seem daunting, following these simple tips will ensure that your audience seeks you out for relevant content in your industry.  If you would like more information about digital marketing, contact us.
