5 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of LinkedIn 6-7-17.jpg

When you think of social media, you probably think of something frivolous.  You think of arguments on Facebook over the latest TV show, Pinterest photo galleries getting shared and re-shared, and Twitter storms that go on and on about celebrity gossip.  However, social media is much deeper than these day-to-day entertainments.  It's where we communicate with our friends and family, it's where we follow the companies whose products we use, and it is where we network to make connections. Nowhere is this clearer than on LinkedIn.  Referred to by some people as Facebook for professionals, LinkedIn is where people go to shake digital hands, exchange information, grow their network, and find work.  For companies looking for a new vein of social media marketing, LinkedIn is also a gold mine.  If you want to know how to get the maximum results for your efforts though, you should consider the following 5 tips.

Tip #1: Don't Be Afraid To Use The Sponsored Updates Feature

Sponsored content is not new to social media by any stretch of the imagination.  You go to a website, pay a small fee, and they will take the content you create, and put it in front of more users than it would reach on its own.  In short, the website boosts your signal to give you a leg up on the competition.  LinkedIn's program is different than the programs run by its competitors, though. It allows you to tailor your post, and it lets you pick your audience.  In a real sense, it lets you reach directly to the segments of the LinkedIn population who are most likely to pick up what you're laying down, and that is a service that's worth the cost of admission.

Tip #2: Make Sure Your Website Is Optimized For Success

If people see your content, hopefully they'll visit your company's website.  When that happens, you want to be sure you have something to show them.  If your website is generic, or a little too Spartan, sit down and give it a makeover.  Add plenty of visual content, make sure your connections are up to date, and ensure that all your text really pops when it's being read.  Your LinkedIn page is what will sell you to people who see your content, and follow it to the source.  Make sure that it really represents you, and that it sends precisely the message you want your potential audience to see.

Tip #3: Join Groups and Participate

LinkedIn, like any other social media site, is chock full of groups.  These groups tend to bunch up around a theme, whether it's the latest news in a given industry, content creators, or just groups that focus on a specific area of the world.  If you want to reach as many people as possible then you should join all the groups applicable to your company, and you should participate in them regularly.  Participation, in this case, is not just posting links to your own accounts, pages, and content.  Offer opinions, share information, and move the conversation forward.  Even if all you offer are small comments on other people's posts, pretty soon you'll be seen as a valued member of the community.  Then when you do make posts about your own content, those posts are going to be noticed, liked, commented on, and shared.  In short, you get a much bigger signal boost from a community that recognizes you as one of their own.

Tip #4: Develop Relationships With Your Connections

While you should add as many connections as possible, that doesn't mean you should keep all of them.  Review the people who connect to you, and look at the pros and cons they offer.  Those who engage with you, and who offer value to your profile, you should keep. Those who are either a problem, or who bring down your rating, should be cut loose.  It may seem counter-intuitive to ever remove connections or followers, but quality is more important than quantity on LinkedIn.  It's not a popularity contest, the way sites like Twitter can be.  You want connections that boost your signal, and raise your profile.  If someone isn't doing that, cut the line.

Tip #5: LinkedIn Is Not Your Resume

Too often we think of a LinkedIn page as an online copy of our resume.  Something that's dead and done.  Rather, your LinkedIn presence needs to be vibrant, vital, and alive in order to really resonate with your audience.  So make changes, update your status, create content, join discussions, and make it very clear you are alive and active.
