Many inbound marketing problems are directly related to a business' strategy. If your plan isn't right from the start, then your results will always be lackluster.

Sometimes it helps to go back to the very beginning. Here's the right way to target prospective customers:

Identify your target audience

First, based on your current customers, identify your target audience. These are the people who will likely have an interest in your products.

According to a recent Entrepreneur article, it helps to imagine your ideal client and pinpoint his characteristics:

"If you have not done so already, analyze and determine your ideal client. Review your current client list: Which customers generate the greatest profit margin and are also the easiest to work with? Looking back at your company's history, which leads are most likely to hire your business, and which ones are going to opt for the competition, no matter what incentives or marketing tactic you use?"

This will give you a good idea of who you should target in your marketing campaign. You'll need this for all your inbound marketing efforts.

Let go of the "dream client"

Many businesses get caught up in chasing the perfect client, even when they know that their chances are low to begin with. This is mostly a waste of time.

Learn to move on from clients who are unlikely to commit, even if they could potentially be a huge account. It's better to focus on many users in your target audience.

Create content for your audience

Once you identify your target audience and rule out the dream client, you can focus on content creation. Now, you can create niche content that targets your prospective customers.

The idea is to create excellent content and share it on social media, your website, and other outlets. Users from your target audience will eventually find it when they're browsing the Internet.
